Diabetes and High Cholesterol - a marriage not made in heaven!

Although nearly all adult diabetics have high cholesterol, only about a third of they are being treated for it. Add this to the fact that 71% of diabetics have high blood pressure but only about half are controlling it, and a ticking time bomb is coming into focus.

High cholesterol and high blood pressure both increase the risk of heart disease. Most people with diabetes will die from heart disease. It would seem a "no-brainer" that all persons with diabetes should pay close attention to cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. Yet, most are more likely to know their golf handicap that these more vital numbers!

That's why we've included blood glucose and blood pressure in our cholesterol testing. We take all your numbers and calculate your heart disease risk, and give you simple tips to improve your chances. Lowering your cholesterol by 9% reduces heart disease risk by 19% - a better than 2 for 1 return. Not bad! Wouldn't you invest in a stock that promised you that return?

Hemoblogin A1c - What's Your Number?

Like most people, your blood sugar goes up and down minute by minute. How high is it now? Or at 3AM? You can't test your blod sugar levels constantly. So how can you know if you blood sugar levels are in overall control? You can check your hemoglobin A1c. Hemoblogin A1c measures your overall average blood sugar for the past 3 months. It takes into account all the up and down swings. This number can then be correlated to an average blood sugar. Hemoglobin A1c is quick and easy to measure at Meadow Lane Pharmacy. Plus, we'll go over your results with you and explain how it relates to your diabetes control. Controlling diabetes, after all, is the main goal, so as to prevent complications and lead to a longer, healthier life.

Diabetics can Benefit from more fiber in the diet

A diet high in fiber could be as effective as medication in controlling blood sugar for patients with type 2 diabetes, new research shows. Patients who ate at least 50 grams a day of fiber from fruit, vegetables and grains saw significant improvements in several key measures of diabetes, as well as in their cholesterol levels, the study found. Choose whole fruits (vs fruit juice), whole-grain bread (vs white bread), whole wheat pasta (vs white pasta), and bran cereals.

If you're not accustomed to eating plenty of fiber, increase your intake gradually to give your body time to adjust & avoid unpleasant intestinal problems.

Need help getting to this level of fiber? Check out our 90-Day Challenge Weight Management Program. Contact us with your questions. Phone 402-489-0220 or email mlpharmacy@alltel.net.

Kids at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

There is an alarming increase in type 2 diabetes in children and teens. Type 2 diabetes is usually seen in adults, but is becoming more common in kids. This is thought to be due to increased obesity and lack of exercise.

The American Diabetes Association now recommends that children at risk be tested for diabetes every 2 years, beginning at age 10. Those at risk include those 20% overweight, with a family history of diabetes, those in certain ethnic groups (Asians, Hispanics, African Americans), and those with signs of hypertension or high cholesterol.

Early signs of diabetes are increased thirst and frequent trips to the bathroom. If you or your kids fit any of these criteria, check with your doctor, or schedule a screening with us.

Diabetes Education = Diabetes Control

Meadow Lane Pharmacy has offered diabetes education for several years. Over 16 million Americans have diabetes, yet only about half of them even know it! There is no cure for diabetes, but much can be done to control it. The key to control is education. By learning about diabetes and its treatment, the person with diabetes can prevent or minimize the long-term complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, nerve problems, and circulation problems that can result in amputations.

Meadow Lane Pharmacy provides a customized program, tailored to each individual patient's needs. Rather than teach diabetes to a large class, we teach it on a one-on-one basis in a private counseling room. This more private setting often allows a more relaxed setting which improves learning. The patient is not inhibited from asking what they fear may be a "dumb question" in front of others. The educational materials can be customized to each person's particular needs, and the program can be conducted at a pace comfortable to the patient.

The keys to controlling diabetes are (1) learning as much as possible about diabetes, (2) closely monitoring the blood sugar, and (3) following your doctor's recommendations regarding diet & exercise as closely as possible. By doing so, you'll avoid complications, feel better, miss fewer days from school or work, and save money taking care of yourself. We can help you achieve better control of your diabetes.

We meet with patients with diabetes on a regular basis and review previous discussions and go over the blood sugar readings. We can enter the information from your blood glucose monitor into a computer and send computerized reports to your doctor. This helps your doctor fine-tune your therapy to keep you in good control.

Topics covered in the diabetes education program include:

introduction to diabetes, patient's particular history

diet, including meal planning assistance and materials

exercise

medications - insulin, oral medications as prescribed by doctor

home testing of blood sugar - demonstration of home testing equipment

preventing complications

high blood sugar - what to do

low blood sugar - what to do

eye care

skin care

foot care

what to do on sick days

traveling with diabetes

emotional aspects of diabetes

related health topics - cholesterol, blood pressure, impotence

pregnancy-related diabetes

Meadow Lane Pharmacy's Diabetes Education program can be customized to include all pertinent topics or any individual topic on an ala-cart basis. Sessions are scheduled at the patient's convenience and may be daily, weekly, or monthly. By presenting the material over several sessions, patients are better able to grasp the information and review past topics at each session.

Meadow Lane Pharmacy will bill insurance companies for the cost of the education and monitoring services. The Nebraska legislature passed a law last fall (LB99) requiring insurance companies to cover such services.

Our newest service is our Diabetes Data ManagementsService. Once you become good at regularly checking your blood sugar with your home monitor, what do you do with all those results? Hopefully, you're writing them down in your logbook and taking the logbook to your doctor appointments. If you don't use the information you're getting, what good is it?

The problem is, it's sometimes difficult to make heads or tails out of all the information in your logbook. I recently talked to a doctor here in Lincoln, who said that he often spends the entire time allotted to the patient's appointment time trying to decipher the results, leaving little time to tend to other aspects of the patient's diabetes.

With our Diabetes Data Management Service, we can transfer your information to our computer and print it out in several ways, such as charts and graphs, that make it immediately useful to you or your doctor. Times of the day that you are not in control are quickly recognizable, allowing your doctor to fine-tune your treatment plan. Since we know that better control of diabetes leads to fewer complications in the future, this information will help you live a longer, healthier life, and save money, too!

We would be glad to give you a free, no-obligation demonstration of this service. Call us at
489-0220 or e-mail to mlpharmacy@alltel.net to schedule an appointment.
