our unique, personalized asthma education program.
Nebraska ranks 2nd in the nation in asthma deaths, mostly caused by lack
of information about the nature of the disease and how to trat it and
avoid acute attacks. Our 3-session asthma education program is designed
to help you control asthma, reduce days missed from school and work, and
eliminate emergency-room trips.

Asthma fact
Persons with asthma have 75% more sick days than those without; 45% say
their asthma limits their lifestyle. Yet over half of patients with asthma
don't use the medications their doctor has prescribed correctly. Although
83% of doctors recommend peak-flow meters so that people with asthma can
predict problems before the occur, only 62% of their patients had ever
heard of such an item, only 28% have one, and only 9% use it at least
once a week. If you have asthma and are not using a peak flow meter, call
us to learn how to get one ABSOLUTELY FREE!

Autumn brings about allergies for many people.
Over-the-counter antihistamines are useful, but can cause drowsiness in
some persons. Several antihistamines are available by prescription only
that do not cause drowsiness. If you are troubled by allergies, call or
visit us for a personalized recommendation. Antihistamines should be used
with caution if you have certain conditions, such as prostate enlargement
or glaucoma, or are taking other medications that cause drowsiness.
Asthma may become more prevalent in the fall,
since pollen in the air and participation in fall sports may trigger it.
We are working with area physicians and other health professionals to
enroll persons with asthma in a Community Asthma Project. If you have
asthma, please call us for details. You will be provided with valuable
information about asthma, and receive a free peak-flow meter, which helps
predict asthma problems before they become severe. Our goal in this effort
is to educate persons with asthma about the disease and how to deal with
it and much, much more.

Update
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has
issued new guidelines for the treatment of asthma in children. Asthma
is the most common pediatric chronic disease in this country, affecting
nearly 5 million children. Each year, about 200,000 asthmatic children
are hospitalized and 5000 children with asthma die. What is particularly
troubling is that the incidence and severity of asthma is going up.
Another recent study indicates that although patients
are being prescribed "spacer" devices to make their inhalers more effective,
many patients are not using them, or even obtaining them from the pharmacy.
Some insurance companies do not cover them as they do prescription drugs,
and they can be expensive. They greatly enhance the benefit from the inhaler
devices, though, so patients and parents should contact their pharmacy
for assistance.
Your Meadow Lane Pharmacy pharmacists, John Krick
and Harmony Macdonald are involved with the Community Asthma Education Initiative.
This is a group of professionals working together to improve asthma care
in the community. The group also includes doctors, nurses, and representatives
from the hospitals and schools. The goal of the group is to improve the
asthma patient's understanding of asthma. By understanding asthma, it
is hoped patients will avoid serious situations, reduce visits to the
hospital, miss fewer days from work or school, lead a more normal life,
and save money. Our initial goal is to register persons with asthma or
their parents into a database. This will allow us to provide educational
materials, answer questions, and generally help prevent asthma attacks.
You may register in our pharmacy or on-line at this website (see Asthma).
When you register, we will more fully explain the project and provide
you with a FREE peak flow meter to help you predict trouble with asthma.
You may also register by phone at 489-0220

Asthma is a disease that is increasing in incidence, and those
with it are often sicker that in previous years. There are may theories
as to the reason, none proven. What is known, though, is that many people
with asthma do not understand the nature of asthma, and over half do not
use their medications correctly. Asthma is a disease that can be controlled
with proper education.
Meadow Lane Pharmacy offers a personalized, one-on-one asthma education
program. Rather that teach a large group in a classroom setting, we design
the program according to each patient's individual needs. The sessions
are scheduled according to the patient's particular needs, and include
how to use a peak flow meter
how to use inhalers
how to use oral asthma mediations
how to use a nebulizer
how to select safe over-the-counter medications
what to do in emergencies
Each session reviews previous material, introduces new information, and
reviews the patient's status since the last visit. Peak flow readings
are reviewed, and potential problems identified. The patient's doctor
receives a report following each sessions, so that needed changes in therapy
can be made quickly, rather than waiting for the next doctor visit.

Many insurance companies pay for the cost of this program. Meadow Lane
Pharmacy will make every effort to assist the patient in obtaining reimbursement
for the cost of this valuable program.
